Gassho,
It is with deep regret and much sorrow that we report the loss of Master Toshio Kuramoto sensei. Our dear sensei passed away on Thurs. May 24th at 3:10pm. He was only 58 years old and is survived by his loving wife and teen-age daughter,
Chieko and Eri.

In October 1969, at the age of 21, Toshio joined Koshigaya Doin of Saitama, Japan. Wanting to see the world, he left Japan at age 23 and arrived in Los Angeles, where he joined the Los Angeles Shorinji Kempo Branch under the late former branch master, Mr. Hirokazu Yamamori. He returned to Japan after two years, but was determined to contribute to the development of Shorinji Kempo in the U.S.A. and left Japan again. He served as Dojo-cho of the Los Angeles Branch until he established his own Shorinji Kempo branch in Hollywood in October of 1998.

He received the 7th Dan rank of Shorinji Kempo in October 2005 in Japan, becoming one of a very few, highest Dan holders in the U.S.A. Kuramoto sensei was also an ordained priest, Gonchudoshi, of the Kongo-Zen Sohonzan Shorinji Temple in Shikoku, Japan.

In 2002, Kuramoto sensei was inducted into the Martial Arts Masters Hall of Fame and also appeared on the cover of the September 2002 issue of Black Belt Magazine and in feature articles in the October 2002 and July 2003 issues of Martial Art Magazine, thus promoting Shorinji Kempo through America's two most popular martial arts publications. He appeared often on TV, in films, print media and commercials and was also a well-known Zen Acu-Therapist.

Kuramoto sensei was also involved in teaching arrest and control techniques for the Los Angeles Police Department for several years. Many of his students are policemen and police SWAT team members in different cities throughout Southern California. In August 2006, he was appointed as a member of the Civilian Martial Arts Advisory Panel for the Los Angeles Police Department (CMAAP for LAPD), as the first Japanese person for the position. In January 2007 he moved his Hollywood branch to the City of Industry Sheriff's Community Center.

Kuramoto sensei made a huge contribution to the development of Shorinji Kempo in the U.S.A., and also for the betterment and safety of his community by helping the Los Angeles Police Department. As a living example of Shorinji Kempo, Kuramoto sensei taught men, women and children of all ages, the true spirit and pure joy of learning the techniques and philosophy of Shorinji Kempo.

Shorinji Kempo - City of Industry Sheriff's Branch (formerly Hollywood Branch)
Blue Johnson - Senior Advisor

will be held on Saturday, June 2nd, 2007 at Higashi Honganji Buddhist Temple
in Los Angeles, CA. The address is: 505 E. 3rd Street, Los Angeles, CA 90013.

This was a very good course. I highly recommend it to anyone. This was one experience that will stay with me.

There are entire books devoted to shelters, but if you were to only learn one,
it should be the life-saving, "Quick Shelter". This is probably the most important
survival skill that you can learn because more people die in survival situations for
lack of adequate shelter than for any other cause.

Tracker Dan is a very easy going and knowledgeable man.
He has very good Ranger Survival Skills. I recommend his DVD to anyone. Visit his web site to learn more,

Marines Corps Corps News Native Americans Served 'beyond the call'
Submitted by: MCB Hawaii

Story by Compiled from DoD news releases

MARINE CORPS BASE HAWAII, KANEOHE BAY, Hawaii (Nov. 7, 2003) -- When the 20th century came to a close, there were nearly 190,000 Native American military veterans. It is well recognized that, historically, Native Americans have the highest record of service per capita when compared to other ethnic groups. The reasons behind this disproportionate contribution are complex and deeply rooted in traditional American Indian culture.

In many respects, Native Americans are no different from others who volunteer for military service. They do, however, have distinctive cultural values that drive them to serve their country. One such value is their proud warrior tradition.

In part, the warrior tradition is a willingness to engage the enemy in battle. This characteristic has been clearly demonstrated by the courageous deeds of Native Americans in combat. However, the warrior tradition is best exemplified by the following qualities said to be inherent to most, if not all, Native American societies: strength, honor, pride, devotion and wisdom. These qualities make a perfect fit with military tradition.

American Indian soldiers, Sailors, Marines, and airmen have fought heroically in all of this century's wars and armed conflicts. They have not only been formally recognized for their bravery through military decoration but through anecdotal observation as well.

The Medal of Honor
Throughout history, American Indians have been among those soldiers to be distinguished by receiving the nation's highest military honor, the Congressional Medal of Honor, which is awarded for military heroism "above and beyond the call of duty."

Five Native Americans in World War II, three from the Korean War and 16 during the period of the Indian Wars exhibited extraordinary bravery in the face of the enemy and, in many cases, made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.
